The huge 20-ton blocks of snow are formed by
building a wooden frame, then using huge snowblowers to pile in
the snow. The blocks are 10 x 10 x 12 feet tall. The snow is then packed down by volunteer
snow-stompers.

After the snow sits and freezes for about 24 hours, the wooden frame is
removed...

... and voila! After about 5 days of sitting and settling, 18 huge
blocks of snow are ready for sculpting, by the 18 teams of
sculptors from all over the world.
