World Cup Aerials

The World Cup Aerials competition, held on 1/31/98 in Breckenridge on Peak 9 1/2, gives skiers a chance to go off a ski jump, twist and turn upside down and all around (thereby risking life and limb), and get paid for it! The aerialists are competing for $20,000 in prize money.

The World Cup Aerials competition is part of the annual Breckenridge Freestyle Festival, which also includes mogul competitions and acroski (formerly known as ballet).

All photos taken on 1/31/98. Quite a good turnout! That horizontal speck near the upper right hand corner of the photo is a skier, in mid-tumble.

Here's a closer view. The skier is horizontal; skis are to the left, head is to the right (see closeup).

Another brave soul takes the plunge. Most of the contestants are upside down at one point during their gyrations.
